Technological platforms have always fascinated me. All internet-based ventures (Google, Facebook and the like) have been the focus of my learning and education. Aroused by this curiosity to learn more, I read an article by The Economist – Workers of the world, log in.
It is a long piece that takes LinkedIn’s platform as a basis to expand on how it plans to achieve its grander objectives. Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn since 2008, has some really grand ambitions to use the technological platform to change the economics of the global workforce and improve the efficiency of global economies. As the Economist explained its facets, I was intrigued by the entire concept of LinkedIn.
That fuelled me to carry out my own research on the foundations of LinkedIn to its present-day situation to its transition to a potential superpower of global employment. I read up on LinkedIn, how and why it started, what it offers, why it has become what it has become today and what it plans to do in the future. All this led me to form an understanding of LinkedIn as a business and enabled me to put forth my thoughts in a series of posts. Aided by the facets mentioned by The Economist regarding the future of the labour market, I thought of how and what LinkedIn might and would do in order to reach its goal through the use of its “economic graph”.
Through the series of these six posts, I have tried to cover my understanding of LinkedIn, its offerings and its aspirations to boost global labour efficiency. The purpose of this series is to bring forth an understanding and perspective towards LinkedIn and create a base to engender opinion that will benefit all.
